Steve Hold has been involved in a wide variety of remediation and repairs to Heritage Structures that range from castles to old maritime seawalls, old jetties and piers which have in many instances used the ‘secret fix’ and Heritage body approved Cintec stitching anchors. This sensitive design solution method for a variety of heritage problems and masonry movements have produced economical solutions for very challenging engineering problems. In addition to this, use of modern digital technology such as LiDAR and drone surveys have proved
very effective in allowing engineers and clients to understand these very difficult but important structures and how to preserve and
maintain them.

This Neolithic monument was the subject of a LiDAR survey and measurement exercise to capture the geometry of the burial mound. Trees had been planted around the medieval chapel on the bank of the mound and were thought likely to be disturbing and damaging the mound so an initial accurate monitoring survey model was produced.

WWII concrete seawalls in Jersey
St. Ouen seawall and the seawall at Gunsite Café were investigated for the integrity of the concrete to be able to receive additional modern reinforced concrete for protection and structural enhancement. In the case of St. Ouen, it was to arrest erosion and in the case of the Gunsite Café it was to alleviate flooding behind the wall. This work has also culminated in a technical paper on WWII concrete walls in Jersey.

Investigations were carried out into the heritage aspects of this unique concrete and a value engineered project ensued. This structure was investigated and found to have a huge void at the end of the Breakwater. It was repaired and protected in 2006 and was also the subject of Steve’s I.C.E. Breakwaters Paper for the I.C.E.

Plemont Footbridge
This spectacular footbridge provides access down to the tourist beach of Plemont on the rugged north west coast of Jersey. The beach is only accessible at low tide via the footbridge and it was the subject of repair works and then assessment and monitoring works.

Mont Orgueil Castle, First Gate, Gorey
This project involved carrying out a LiDAR survey to measure and track the geometry of the first gate at Mont Orgueil Castle. The buttressing arrangements at the foot of the gate had been disturbed by the construction of a car park and LiDAR surveys and monitoring were used to assess the cracking and rate of movement that enabled repairs to be carried out.
